It was founded in 1952 as Huazhong Institute of Technology (HIT) alongside two other schools, the South-Central China Institute of Water Conservancy and Electric Power, and the South-Central China Institute of Power Engineering. In 1984, the State Council approved the reform to for include HIT among the first 22 universities to offer graduate studies. Along the reform, the school was renamed as the Huazhong University of Science and Technology or HUST.
In 2000, another reform was passed and the preceding HUST was fused with the Tongji Medical University, Wuhan Science and Technology and Vocational College, and the Wuhan Urban Construction Institute. Since HUST was the higher institution between the three, the name was retained to encompass the three institutions under a single banner.
